Simultaneous bilateral polycystic nephrectomy to prepare for kidney transplant: experience at Hue Central Hospital

Subjects and Methods: Retrospective descriptive study of bilateral polycystic kidney patients undergoing simultaneous bilateral nephrectomy to prepare for kidney transplant at Hue Central Hospital from January 2019 to March 2023. Results: 28 patients underwent surgery including 13 men and 15 women; average age is 49 (28 - 59). Family history of polycystic kidney disease was found in 69.2%; 100% of hemodialysis cases. Common clinical symptoms are low back pain (71.4%); gross hematuria (46.4%). Computed tomography of the urinary system showed an average longitudinal kidney size of 26.5 ± 9.4 cm, and an average largest kidney cyst size of 5.7 ± 2.7 cm. The average surgical time was 111 (88 - 175) minutes. Complications during and after surgery with fever > 380C (25%); postoperative intestinal obstruction (17.9%); bleeding requiring blood transfusion (3.6%). Conclusions: Simultaneous bilateral polycystic nephrectomy before kidney transplant is a safe and effective treatment method, helping to create space for the transplanted kidney and prevent complications of polycystic kidney.
